What is a flange

To connect valves, pipes, pumps and other similar equipment, a special mounting method is used - a flange. This option implies the availability of quick access to the cleaning of pipeline elements, as well as its modification, repair and diagnostics.

Design features and types of connections

Depending on the scope of application, flanges can have a different mounting option - thread or welding. The fastener itself can be made of different materials. The most popular option is forged carbon steel, but cast iron, nodular graphite, hardened steel, aluminium, bronze, brass, plastic, etc. are also common.

There are the following types of flanges:

  • Through.
  • With a neck for welding.
  • Threaded.
  • Collar options.
  • Expansion.
  • Transitional, etc.

In the case of a special application, the flanges can be internally coated with a different material than the one used to make the part itself.

Mounting methods and scope

The choice of components depends on the pipes used. In most cases, different materials are used for pipes and flanges. Flanged connections, regardless of type, consist of several basic elements:

  • Basically a flange.
  • Additional fasteners - washers, studs, nuts, etc.
  • Gaskets that provide higher waterproofing.

With features such as ease and ease of installation, ease of modification and repair, and versatility in use, these components are widely used for pipeline installation in a wide variety of industries and under any conditions.

When choosing the right option, consider the following factors:

  • Operating pressure. This indicator depends on the pressure under which the desired liquid is transported through the pipe. Accordingly, the higher this indicator, the more durable the fasteners should be.
  • Temperature. One of the most important factors. From the temperature of the environment in which the pipeline will be located, the material and brand of the fastener are selected.
  • Wednesday. This is influenced by factors such as temperature, as well as the chemical parameters of the space - aggressive or non-aggressive. Depending on this, the desired option is selected, which will have the necessary resistance to the impact of these negative factors.
  • Thread diameter indicator. All flanges have two thread diameters - internal and external. Depending on the situation and relevant regulations, the data may be given in millimeters or inches.
  • Thread pitch. Specifies the distance between different thread vertices. Basically, there are large and small steps. These indicators are in most cases determined by state regulations, but exceptions are possible when using non-standard designs.
  • Bolt and stud length. Data that is directly specified when ordering a particular variant.
  • Coating. To protect the fastening elements from the negative effects of various factors, a protective coating using zinc, chromium, nickel or other options is additionally used.

Taking into account all these factors allows you to get the best option that will ensure reliable fastening of the pipeline under specific conditions.
