What is a plug tap in plumbing? Mr maintenance of gas plug valves. Plug tap application

The pipes supplying gas to the stove must be equipped with an individual tap, which serves to shut off the gas supply in the event of a leak or malfunction of the gas stove. The gas valve requires constant monitoring and timely maintenance. If a faucet malfunction is detected, an urgent replacement of the device is required.

Selection of gas valves

If a malfunction is detected in the operation of the gas valve, it is recommended to replace the device as soon as possible. First of all, you need to select a new valve. When choosing, experts recommend considering:

  • type of valve;
  • basic device parameters.

Kinds

The gas pipe valve can be:

  • cork. The body of the plug valve contains a conical element driven by a flywheel. There is a hole in the conical element (plug), which, when combined with a hole in the pipe, allows gas to flow to the equipment. The seal acts as a sealing material that seals the connection between the faucet and the pipes;

  • spherical The design of a ball-type gas valve differs from a plug valve in that the locking mechanism is based on a ball made of durable metal. The ball has a hole, which, when the flywheel is turned, is located along the gas pipeline and in this way passes gas to the consumer.

According to the method of connection to pipes, a household ball valve can be:

  • threaded The valve is connected to the gas pipeline pipes with a threaded connection;

  • flanged. The connection to the pipes is made using flanges, which in turn are fixed with bolts;

  • welded, that is, installed using a welding machine.

Threaded and flanged valves are reusable, that is, if necessary, you can remove the device from the gas pipe, check its functionality, carry out repairs and install it in its original place. The welded valve can only be installed once.

Basic selection parameters

To select a gas shut-off valve, it is recommended to pay attention to the following factors:

  • pipeline diameter. The shut-off element of the valve must completely block the pipe in the apartment. If the valve is larger or smaller, the tightness of the tap will not be complete;
  • pitch and diameter of the thread on the pipeline. To quickly replace the device, it is necessary that the specified parameters completely match. Otherwise, you will need to purchase and install additional adapters;
  • the material from which the gas pipeline valve is made. It is more advisable to purchase brass taps, as they have a longer service life. You can also find silumin, zinc and plastic taps on sale. You can distinguish the material used to make the valve by weight. Brass faucets are heavier than faucets made from other materials. In addition, you can inspect the place where the thread is cut. Brass has a yellow tint, and all other materials (except plastic) are gray;

  • The valve body must be free of chips, sagging, cracks and other defects. The presence of these factors indicates non-compliance with the rules for manufacturing the product, which will lead to a reduction in service life;
  • It is more advisable to purchase valves from well-known manufacturers. For example, you can choose cranes manufactured by Bugatti (Italy), Dungs (Germany), Broen Ballomax (Poland).

Following simple rules when choosing a gas valve will allow you to choose a reliable device with a long service life.

Gas valve installation

Preparatory stage

To change the gas valve in the kitchen yourself, you need to prepare:

  • new tap;
  • two gas keys. One wrench is required to unscrew the threads, and the second to hold the down tube stationary. Otherwise, the pipeline leading directly to the gas stove may be damaged;
  • means for sealing threaded connections. FUM tape, Tangit Unilok thread or regular linen thread are suitable. When using linen thread, additional treatment of the sealing material with paint is necessary;

  • graphite lubricant intended for gas valves;

  • for pipe. If you replace the valve together, you can do without using a plug.

Replacement process

The gas valve is replaced according to the following scheme:

  1. the gas supply to the living space is cut off. To do this, the gas valve handle is turned to a position perpendicular to the pipe;

  1. the valve is unscrewed from the pipe. If you cannot unscrew the thread, it is recommended to treat the threaded connection with WD-40, which will ensure smooth operation. If a welded valve is installed in the apartment, then it is cut off using a grinder, and on pipes;
  2. A temporary plug is installed in place of the valve. If the work of replacing the gas valve is carried out by two people, then instead of the plug you can use your partner’s finger. This procedure will facilitate the process of installing a new faucet;
  3. a sealing thread is screwed onto the thread;

  1. a layer of graphite lubricant is applied on top of the thread;

  1. A new faucet is being installed.

The process of replacing a gas valve yourself is presented in the video.

  • open the tap and start supplying gas to the stove;
  • prepare a saturated soap solution, which is applied to the tap and connection points.

If the device and threads allow gas to pass through, small soap bubbles will form at the leakage site. If a leak is detected, the problem must be corrected quickly.

Doing the job of replacing a gas valve yourself is risky. Any careless action or violation of safety regulations may result in an explosion. Therefore, it is recommended that replacement be carried out by qualified personnel.

1. Gas tap maintenance

A positive feature of Soviet gas taps is their long service life and maintainability. However, such a faucet requires regular maintenance, since the tightness of such a device is ensured by grinding the faucet plug to the body; read more about this in our article.
The appearance of a gas smell in the area of the plug valve is not a reason to replace it, but you will still have to call a gas service representative to eliminate the cause of the leak.
This manual describes step by step the process of revising the two most popular gas plug valves: coupling and tension. Please note that this article is not a call to action, but is offered solely for informational purposes, since gas-hazardous work must be carried out by specialized organizations that have the necessary permits. It will be useful to those who want to personally verify the quality of the tap inspection performed by the gas service.
1.1 Preparatory work

Before you begin inspecting the gas tap, you need to find out whether the tap is actually the source of the leak. To do this, you need to wash the tap by applying foam to the connections. We find places where gas is leaking to make sure that the valve is indeed the cause of the leak.

Note. The hose leading to the gas equipment was specially removed to show that a gas leak from the outside very often means that the tap itself is leaking. Therefore, the options of lubricating the case with lubricant on the outer surface, sealing it with plasticine and other traditional methods do not completely solve the problem, but only create the illusion of safety.
To carry out an inspection, there is no need to remove the gas valve from the gas pipeline. In this article, this is done solely for clarity of the process. However, it is necessary to shut off the gas supply to the gas pipeline and relieve the pressure, and also warn neighbors so that they turn off all gas-consuming appliances!

1.2 Required tools

To perform the audit you will need the following tool:
wide flat screwdriver
open-end wrench No. 17
lubricant for gas valves
rags

Note. In the absence of a special gas lubricant, it can be completely replaced with graphite lubricant. It is undesirable to use solid oil, since its properties are highly dependent on temperature.

Tap– a shut-off device in which the movable part of the valve (plug, ball) has the shape of a rotating body with a hole for passing the flow, to close which it rotates around its axis.

Plug taps

The term “plug valve” also refers to ball valves, but for simplicity, only conical (cone-shaped plug 8-10 0) and cylindrical valves are usually called plug valves.

Plug valves consist of: a body, a plug that has horizontal and vertical annular grooves for lubrication, a spindle, a control lever, a valve position indicator, a lever travel limiter, a check valve with lubrication, a clamping bolt, and a lower flange. To close the tap, use a lever to turn the plug 90 0 .

Plug taps Du above 100mm have gearboxes to reduce the load at the time of closing or opening.

The positive qualities of a plug tap include the simplicity of its design. The disadvantage is the high hydraulic resistance, since the plug has a flow area that is 25-30% smaller than the nominal diameter of the connection pipes. This negatively affects the cleaning of the cavity of the installed gas pipeline, and during operation, hydrate may form in the shut-off units.

Ball Valves

Ball valves differ from others in their simplicity of design; the body and ball have smaller overall dimensions and weight, as well as greater strength.

The advantages of ball valves also include a fireproof design, which provides for closing the valve in the event of a fire. The manufacture of these taps is less labor intensive. In ball valves with plastic rings, there is no need to grind in the sealing surfaces. The ball is usually chromed or polished.

Lapping of conical mating surfaces

In addition to lapping parts using laps, lapping the mating surfaces of parts directly to one another is also used. Such work includes grinding in various taps and valves, where a tight fit of conical surfaces is required.

The conical surfaces of the tap (plug and seat) are pre-processed on a lathe, after which they are subjected to grinding. Grinding in of the brass valve plug is performed in the following sequence.

1. The surfaces to be ground are cleaned of dust, dirt and wiped dry.

2. The valve body is clamped in a vice with the large conical hole facing upward.

3. An even layer of GOI paste (medium), diluted in kerosene, is applied to the conical surface of the cork.

4. The cork is inserted into the conical socket, and a knob is placed on the square of the cork axis.

5. The driver with the plug is subjected to a reciprocating circular motion with axial pressure (Fig. 248). In this case, after a half turn in one direction, the cork is lifted, then lowered and, with light pressure, turned half a turn in the other direction.

Rice. 248. Technique for lapping the conical plug of the bushing tap

6. After making eight to ten such movements, remove the plug from the valve body, wipe all the surfaces to be ground dry and check the quality of the grinding.

7. An even layer of paste is applied to the surface of the cork a second time and the grinding techniques are repeated.

8. Lapping is alternated with applying paste until a continuous, clean, matte surface is obtained both on the plug and in the conical hole.

9. After finishing the grinding, remove the plug, wash all surfaces in kerosene and wipe dry.

The quality of lapping is determined by the density of contact between the conical surfaces of the plug and the hole. For this:

1. Draw a line with a pencil on the surface of the cork along the generatrix.

2. The plug with the line is inserted into the conical hole and, with light pressure, the plug is turned one or two full turns. If the line is erased evenly along the entire length, then the planes are ground in correctly.

If you or your neighbor are faced with such annoying problems as: a jammed faucet, a burner that doesn’t light, or an electric ignition that constantly works while gas equipment repair services are beyond your means, then this section will help you carry out a superficial repair. DIY gas stove repair.

Basically, all components and assemblies of a gas stove are motionless, rigidly and securely attached to the body of the product. The only exception here is a gas valve with a rotating bronze plug inside, which leaks gas when the graphite lubricant dries. Gas and air combine to form an explosive mixture that can cause a lot of trouble. So we'll take a closer look at the structure of the stove's gas tap and how to deal with gas leaks.

The structure of the stove gas tap

1 - pen;
2 - rod;
3 - hairpin;
4 - gas pipeline;
5 - conical plug;
6 - valve body;
7 - slab wall;
8 - screw;
9 - nipple;
10 - damper;
11 - burner body.

Gas valve (Fig. 1) Let's start with the valve body6 , which is rigidly screwed with a clamp to the gas pipeline of the stove. There is a hole at the bottom of the faucet4 , which leads gas to the stove burner. There is a small nipple in the faucet opening that connects the pipe and the faucet. To burn gas, air and gas are mixed (injected) in a Venturi tube in certain proportions. Also in the gas valve, it is equipped with an idle speed adjustment screw.

There is a bronze plug inside the tap 5 conical in shape, which, when turned, regulates the gas supply to the stove thermostat, and then to the burner. In order for our plug to be reliable and fixed in the valve body, a pressure spring is installed, which rests against the plug, preventing it from jumping out from the gas pressure. There is a groove in the housing cover that guides the plug during rotation.

Gas valve malfunctions and their elimination

G it burns sluggishly or flows poorly into the burner , even when we open the tap at full capacity. This usually means that the nozzle hole of the stove is clogged with combustion products or food. You can clean it with a sharp knitting needle or use sharpened non-metal objects (toothpick, match). A needle and other thin metal objects can break and leave a hole beyond repair. It is best to unscrew the nozzle and wash it in a soapy solution of cleaning products.

TO the wound turns tightly , and when returning to the off position. inaudible characteristic metallic click. The usual cause is a lack of graphite grease on the bronze valve plug. Oxidation and contamination of the rotary rod. In this case, reassembling the stove tap and completely flushing it will give a positive result.

Before removing the tap, make sure that there is no gas in the system by opening the stove burner.

To dismantle the gas stove tap, you need to remove all the plastic handles and the decorative panel behind them. Once we have removed the outer panel, we have full access to the gas valve studs that hold the valve to the pipeline. The pin must be unscrewed and carefully removed. Unscrew the valve body in your hands, remove the bronze plug and the spring itself. It happens that the cork sticks to the body, then you need to use improvised objects and try to pull it out. We insert the tool into the gap between the plug and the body, carefully turn the plug in a circle and pull it towards you. It is advisable to wash all faucet parts that are in your hands in a solvent and wipe dry.

It must be remembered that the body and plug of the faucet are made of bronze (with the exception of the stud) and when cleaning them from dirt, iron (steel) objects should not be used. A small damage or scratch may cause a gas leak. Use cotton swabs or a wooden stick. After cleaning, make sure that there are no pieces of cotton wool or thread fibers left inside, be sure to blow it out. A thin layer of graphite lubricant is applied to the plug, after which it is inserted into the tap and slightly turned; this is necessary so that the lubricant is distributed evenly over the cone.

WITH free movement of the handle 360° . Usually occurs during prolonged use of the stove. The reasons were that the mounting hole in the handle was broken, the screw of the faucet plug holder was unscrewed, and the pin jumped out of the rod. Measures to repair the damage. In the first case, you should find and install another handle. In the second, replace the rod or solder a flat on it (it is better to use hard solder). In the third, you will have to return the pin to its place.

R The arm turns with great difficulty or does not turn at all . The use of force in this case is not required, since there is a possibility of breaking the valve stem. Usually this defect indicates a foreign object caught in the slot between the body and the plug. To prevent such situations from happening, we advise you to call a gas stove repairman more often for preventative maintenance. condensate
